This month so far has brought both the migrating Western Tanager and the rare vagrant, Summer Tanager to Orange County.
With the Western Tanager being more commonly found in our area this month, the time seemed ripe to upload photos for better up close viewing of this stunning species
A male Western Tanager pauses briefly at Colinas Open Space Park in Mission Viejo, CA. Photo taken on April 15, 2015
Male Summer Tanager taken at Serrano Creek Trail on April 5, 2015. Bird located by a pedestrian who pointed out the finding to Mike Sanders and I. In order to locate this species you had to squat below a large branch of the Mulberry tree and view up.

Stunning. Every time you blog about a bird, I see one shortly after. Hopefully it will be true for these two!

Beautiful bird! “Bird located by a pedestrian who pointed out the finding to Mike Sanders and I.” should read, “….to Mike Sanders and ME.” Sorry,
