Weekly Roundup as of September 19, 2015:
After my post about the male Dickcissel last week, the following day a Bobolink had been sighted at Pond E at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. The Bobolink stayed well below the marsh fleabane for quite sometime. I ran into Curtis Marantz there and believe we waited close to 3 hours. The Bobolink finally appeared on the walk path between ponds E and D at 6:45pm. There’s a photograph below. Both the Dickcissel and the Bobolink continued through the week. A second Bobolink showed up as well as a female Dickcissel yesterday, September 18, just alongside the Audubon House.
Late yesterday morning (9/18/2015) a report was released by Tom Benson in the Orange County Yahoo Birding Group that he had received information from Brittany O’Connor on a male Painted Bunting sighting at Pond E. I had arrived about 2:30pm and found many other birders at this location to obtain views of this colorful and illustrious bird. A group of us spotted the Painted Bunting foraging in the marsh fleabane about 3pm. After a long wait the male flew below us into the mule fat on the slope off the main walkway between the Audubon house and main walkway. It made another round or two back and forth throughout Pond E before finally vanishing into the marsh fleabane on Pond D just after 5pm. It was not seen again to my knowledge.
Earlier in the week on September 16, while canvassing the Oso Reservoir area I came across a Virginia’s Warbler weaving in and out of the mule fat along the main entrance way into the camp ground.
Images of the Virginia’s Warbler, Painted Bunting and Bobolink can also be found below.
