I arrived at Irvine Regional Park around 5pm and met Mike Sanders and Jeff Bray shortly thereafter. At approximately 7:30 we headed toward parking lot 15 and walked toward the back end of Irvine Regional Park. The time of arrival for the Lesser Nighthawk had previously been recorded between 7:40 and 7:50 pm. By 8pm we were beginning to lose hope in thinking this was a “no show”. I had sighted the first Lesser Nighthawk arriving from a SE location at approximately 8:05pm which was soon followed by a second Lesser Nighthawk flying low and within close range at times. They were close enough to hear their low pitched calls as recorded in Jeff’s video which can be found on Jeff’s Flickr account. Around 8:40 pm we had witnessed the calls of a Common Poorwill in the nearby vicinity.
