As of last week, sightings were found at the Santa Ana Cemetery and more recently at the El Toro Memorial Park by a fellow birder, Jeff Bray. Last year I recall sightings at the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and also at the end of Peachwood Drive in Lake Forest to name a few. According to allaboutbirds.org they state some interesting facts: “Lawrence’s Goldfinch breeds across a small range in the woodlands of California and Baja California. Its highly erratic movements from year to year make assessment of its population trends very difficult. The Lawrence’s Goldfinch seems to have no loyalty to its breeding areas, being present in large number in a locality one year and absent the next. Its nomadic movements are probably related to availability of water and seed crops. Unlike most migratory birds, Lawrence’s Goldfinch moves mostly to the east and west, rather than northward and southward, between seasons”.

I’ve include a few photos below from yesterday at the El Toro Memorial Park (2-20-2016) and also just created the Lawrence’s Goldfinch photo gallery.

A male Lawrence’s Goldfinch. Photo taken at El Toro Memorial Park Cemetery, Lake Forest, CA on February 20, 2016

A Male Lawrence’s Goldfinch. Photo taken at El Toro Memorial Park Cemetery, Lake Forest, CA on February 20, 2016

The Lawrence’s Goldfinch is one of those species that’s somewhat uncommon in Orange County (not rare however) and verified sightings are posted only a handful of times throughout the year.
