The two birds looks remarkably similar though the birds’ call was the deciding factor.

Doug Willick, a renown birder and author of the book: “The Birds Of Orange County California” commented on Flickr and stated: “A very nice record for the county, and a good rarity in the state as a whole. Oddly enough, even though Orange County is one of the smallest counties in California, we have quite a few DCFL records now, undoubtedly more than any other county in the state (for example, Mile Square Regional Park has 3 records alone). We haven’t had one in quite a few years it seems, so this will give some of our newer birders a chance to get one on their OC lists! Many of the DCFLs that have wintered in Calif. have lingered into April, but if anyone is hoping to see the bird, I’d still get over to look for it as soon as possible.” (Thanks Doug as always for your expertise and assistance to others)

I was able to get there today at approximately 2pm and ran into Dave Evans and Jack Lindahl. With 3 sets of eyes it helped quite a bit as the willow and pepper trees’ density along with the numerous other species could have made this most challenging for 1 person to locate.

If you use Google Maps or other mapping web sites, here’s the GPS coordinates: 33.9013, -117.8773

Photos of Gilman Park where the bird was seen are below as well as several photos of the Dusky-capped Flycatcher.

Dusky-capped Flycatcher

Dusky-capped Flycatcher

Dusky-capped Flycatcher

Gilman Park –
