Photos > Mew Gull and Eurasian x American Wigeon at Village Pond Park (Lake Forest) and Great Horned Owl at Huntington Central Park on January 7, 2015

Today’s adventure started around 10:45 a.m. with a local visit to Village Pond Park in Lake Forest.  This is a fairly small pond off Ridge Route between Rockfield and Muirlands Blvd. There were no less than 100 Coots, 100 Canada Geese and 100 American Wigeons of which one in the batch was a Eurasian x American Hybrid (see image below).  Along with this batch of ducks and geese were several gulls including a rare 1st cycle Mew Gull (image also below). Here’s the complete eBird Checklist for January 7, 2015 for Village Pond Park.

The journey continued to Huntington Beach – Central Park in search for the Winter Wren at Loren’s Ditch.  After a lengthy scope of the area a revisit around 4pm proved fruitful though unfortunately I was unable to garner any photos except a rear tail shot.  Also at the park were Northern Pintails, 5 Hermit Thrushes and a Great Horned Owl seen near the library adjacent to “tower 6” in a Eucalyptus tree.  Though large in size, this owl was not easy to find.  As a matter of fact other pedestrians were also looking for the Great Horned but were unsuccessful.  After about 15 minutes or so I was able to see his well camouflaged silhouette in the Eucalyptus tree.  Here’s the completed checklist for eBird on January 7, 2015 at Huntington Central Park
