After viewing a pair of Cactus Wrens late last year, my objective was to return to the same GPS coordinates (33.6820, -117.6426) and see if the pair was at the same location and in fact they were (photo of 2 Cactus Wrens below at Whiting Ranch, Orange County CA). A checklist of this brief journey can be found HERE.
Next on the journey was a visit to the San Juan Creek Mouth and beach at Dana Point Harbor. A very low tide offered good views of a variety of gulls (Western, California, Ring-billed and Heermann’s) in various cycles from 1st through 4th and adult stages. Also see were a pair of Black Oystercatchers, Sanderlings, several Snowy Plovers, 8 Snowy Egrets, Willets, and various other species which can be viewed on the January 4th 2015 eBird checklist.
Finally, a visit to Treasure Island (<ebird checklist) at the Montage Hotel for the Surfbird and Black Turnstone proved fruitless as they were unable to be found between 3:30 and 5pm. At least one more Black Oyster Catcher was visible, and Orange-crowned Warbler and a similar variety of gulls as listed above.
